North American(NGC7000) and Pelican Nebula (IC5070)

This is a large emission nebula in the Cygnus area of our Milky Way galaxy. It is around 140 lights years across and even at 2600 light years from earth it covers an area of the sky equivalent to ten full moons. Unfortunately, it is too dim to see with the naked eye, although there are reports of it being visible from dark desert areas in Iraq. It can be seen as a fuzzy patch of light with binoculars from a dark area.

The American nebula is named after the Cygnus wall which appears similar in shape to the Mexico, Central America, area. The Pelican bears some similarity to the head of a Pelican.

This area is an active star forming area, particularly in the Cygnus Wall where stars as young as 100,000 years exist.
