IC 1396 - The Elephant's Trunk Nebula An area of gas and dust in the Cepheus region, ionised by ultra violet radiation from the massive triple star system HD 206267. This is a star forming region and some of the stars in the "Trunk" are very young, perhaps only 100,000 years old. The solar wind from these young stars is pushing gas and dust away from them and creating the hole at the tip of the trunk. Size: 20 Light Years Distance from Earth: 2400 Light Years
